The Chris Pine-led Dungeons and Dragons reboot has found itself another leading star as Michelle Rodriguez has been hired to join the cast.

Michelle Rodriguez arrives with Pine as Game Night directors John Francis Daley, Jonathan Goldstein, continue to build their cast as they also announced that Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Jurassic World: Dominion) will be another addition.

The feature film is based on the fantasy role-playing game that at one time was one of the most popular games on the planet. Daley and Goldstein will also be penning the script, which is based on an earlier draft by Michael Gilio.

While plot details and which role Michelle Rodriguez would be playing are unknown at this point, the game itself is well known for its treasure hunting and fantastic battles, all set inside a fantasy adventure that includes humans, orcs, and elves along with hundreds of other characters. The game is famous for using multi-sided dice and is run by a host called the Dungeon Master. With no movie plot details to go on, it is unknown if the movie will jump right into the Dungeons & Dragons world from the start or if it will be more along the lines of a Jumanji-style movie where characters are pulled into the world.

Dungeons & Dragons has a complicated history with trying to get to the screen, and hopefully adding Michelle Rodriguez to the cast will help this production out. It did get a shot at feature film stardom when New Line Cinema produced the movie in 2000 that starred Jeremy Irons, Justin Whalin, and Marlon Wayans. It was a major critical and commercial flop. Since that time, for years a reboot has been discussed. Warner Bros. was set to produce a movie with Ansel Elgort ready to star and Rob Letterman to direct, but that project fell through. A legal battle ensued between Hasbro and Sweetpea Entertainment as to who owned the rights and after that was established (Hasbro won), the project was moved over to Paramount with Chris McKay the new director. McKay was on board for a while until he had to move on with Daley and Goldstein taking over the directing duties.

Paramount is continuing to co-produce the feature with Brian Goldner at Hasbro and Jeremy Latcham at eOne producing. eOne will be handling the distribution for Europe and Canada while Paramount will handle distribution to the remainder of the world.

Michelle Rodriguez is probably best known for her role as Letty Ortiz in the Fast & Furious franchise, one in which she will be also starring in the upcoming F9. Her other works include James Cameron’s Avatar, Robert Rodriguez’s Machete, and the popular TV series Lost. Rodriguez was also seen in Steve McQueen’s Widows and most recently the Latina movie star was seen in the TV series Backdoor.

Chris Pine is coming off of the TV series I Am the Night, a story that revolved around the unsolved Black Dahlia case, and most recently Pine was seen reprising his role as Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman 1984.

Michelle Rodriguez definitely fits the kind of tough characters that the world of Dungeons & Dragons is known for. It will be exciting to see what she brings to this new adaptation.
