Roman Reigns Was Injured In His Tribal Combat Match With Jey Uso At SummerSlam

Publish date: 2024-06-18

Highlights

The main event of SummerSlam came down to Tribal Combat, with cousin versus cousin, as Jey Uso battled the Tribal Chief Roman Reigns for his Undisputed WWE Universal Championship. Their match ended with yet another twist, this time with Jimmy Uso coming out of the crowd to attack his brother, leading to Jey being pinned by Reigns. Fan reaction to the ending has been mixed but WWE might have something more serious on their hands than overbooking.

According to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio, the face of WWE was hurt during the match. “He’s going to be back Friday, Roman Reigns got hurt in that match. I haven't watched the beginning of the match over again, but I heard it was relatively early. I heard, you know, he got hurt. I don't know the nature of the injury, I just heard that he worked the match hurt. He worked the hurt. He got hurt early in the match. I don't know what his schedule is, but he's gonna be on the show Friday night, so, you know, he would certainly do…I would presume he'll be on Survivor Series. I don't know that as a fact. I'm sure he'll be on the Saudi show. As far as the next two pay-per-views, I don't know the answer to that one yet, but I guess Friday we will. We'll find out.” (h/t WrestlingNews.co)

What Will WWE Do If Roman Reigns Is Out Of Action?

If there's one superstar WWE can't stand to lose, it's Roman Reigns. He's the biggest star in all of wrestling. A serious injury that forces him to drop his title would be a huge change of plans for a company who revolves everything around the Tribal Chief. If it's a more minor injury that causes Reign to only need to miss a few months, then he's actually the ideal wrestler for that to happen to. With Reigns' part-time status, there were already reports that he wasn't being advertised for pay-per-views the next few months. Outside of a few live events, Roman's match at SummerSlam against Jey Uso was actually his first title defense since April against Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 39. A short-term injury would be more determinantal if it happened to a full-time talent like Seth Rollins, who is already dealing with back issues.

Reigns rarely wrestles as it is, so if he couldn't return until around November at Survivor Series, it wouldn't be that noticeable. He could still appear in segments, but it already looks like the SmackDown side of things is going to focus on the feud between Jey Uso and Jimmy Uso, with Solo Sikoa involved somehow, for the next several weeks.

With WWE and Roman Reigns being silent about the injury, however, there are going to be some nervous fans until Friday. On SmackDown we'll find out if things continue as normal, with a banged up Reigns taking a small break, or if something more serious and game changing will be revealed.
