Thomas Rhett Akins Jr. was born on March 30, 1990 in Valdosta, Georgia to Paige Braswell and singer Rhett Akins. Music influenced his life from an early age and he learned to play the drums while still a member of a band called The High Heeled Flip Flops. Rhett often accompanied his father on stage as a drummer.
Rhett attended college at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee, majoring in communications. This was a confusing time for him as he had no career choice in mind outside of music and only went to college because his friends did. Rhett dropped out of college when he was 20 to pursue music full-time, and he won his first gold when he was approached by a Big Machine Label Group manager while playing at a club. He was offered the opportunity to write songs for the label, an offer he accepted.

Born on October 13, 1969 in Valdosta, Georgia, he had formed a band with his two younger brothers before he was a teenager. He briefly attended the University of Georgia, where he majored in business administration before working for his father at his oil and gas distribution company.
